Zoom LWE Podcast 115: Ben UFO
"Many features about Ben UFO are quick to assert “all he does is DJ,” and it’s true that famous DJs with no productions to their names are somewhat rare. But when you consider everything the man born Ben Thomson does as a DJ, from a regular show on Rinse FM, to mix CDs, mixtapes (a proper cassette, that is), podcasts, and the many club gigs, it’s clear Thomson has a much wider engagement with DJing than most. He’s also able to dig deeper than most — after falling for house just a couple short years ago he’s amassed a record collection that would stand proud with those from some of the deepest house heads. Add on top of this co-running Hessle Audio, one of the most influential labels of the past couple years, and it’s a surprise he’s able to do everything he does. One of the undisputed tastemakers of the current UK scene, but with a record bag packed for longevity instead of current trends, we’re elated to present our 115th podcast mixed by Ben UFO. LWE also caught up with him to chat about his house conversion, dance music’s political edges, and Skrillex." - LWE

Zoom Naise - Straight Outta Tha Jar
Naise might be one of the few DJs in Australia that can consider Lunice a fan, with him seen going mental to her set and tweeting things like “@djnaise killeddd it harddddd at Melbourne!!” followed by a tweet on NYD “@djnaise that set you did that night was mind boggling haha”. This mix sees Naise step away from the APC Controller and back behind the decks for a 50 minute journey through old r’n’b (think Aaliyah and Brandy) and new synth pop rollers by the likes of L-Vis 1990, Mensah and GoldFFinch, as well as sprinkles of ghettoness from the likes of French Fries. This mix is a true representation of what to expect from a Naise set. Multiple genres in a short space of time with high energy mixing and a cheeky little smile, that signifies her knowing that she is smashing it!
Aaliyah & Timberland – Try Again L-vis 1990 – Cruisin’ The Blessings – Ibaseta Modeselektor – Berlin feat. Miss Platnum Brandy – What About Us? Modeselektor – Grillwalker Fulgeance – Moonshake Adele – Rolling In The Deep (Jamie xx Shuffle) Zed Bias – Koolade (feat. Toddla T & MdCL) Ango – All That You Can Stand Eliphino – More Than Me Donalds House – I’m Stuck In Your System L-vis 1990 – Here With You Kink & Neville Watson – A Saturday In November feat. Kim Ann Foxman Cardopusher – We Run This State Lone – Boddika Presk & Cinnaman – Sweat (Jon Convex Remix) Manaré – Silk Wiley – Link Up (Instrumental) GoldFFinch – Dirty Bird GoldFFinch – Ovale Roska – Abupt Mensah – The Resistance French Fries – Champagne Pangaea – Hex

Zoom Symbiosis 81 – Same O (Donalds House)
Melbourne DJ and producer, Same O, hits the decks for Symbiosis 81. As part of the Too Much! crew he has been putting on some of Melbourne and Australia’s most forward thinking parties for the last few years.
This mix finds him in fine form and exploring a different side of his tastes.

“This mix has been done completely with Symbiosis in mind. I thought I would try and show how I have progressed as a DJ and the sorts of things I am listening to at the moment. I wanted to feature tunes that just fit nicely together rather than trying to pack the mix full with new tunes, some of the tunes are particularly old but I think this shows the kind of point that dance music is at. A lot of the older Detroit and Chicago sounding stuff is completely at home with this whole sort of UK House/Bass/Techno (whatever you call it) thing happening at the moment. I also decided that I wouldn’t put any of my tunes in the mix and would leave that to the next mix done under the Donalds House monicker which is done by myself and my brother.” – Same O
